Extra Sensory Perception

CURATOR’S STATEMENT
Extra Sensory Perception is the premier exhibition for the painting series Coming To Our Senses by Catya Plate. I would like to extend a special thank you to Eva Kirsch, director of the Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum, for her support of this project.
Over the past five years, it has been a pleasure for me to come to know the extraordinary artwork of Catya Plate. Since 1997, she has been working on this remarkable series of paintings based on the senses. Extensive research into each one of the five senses as well as the sixth sense, intuition, was conducted by the artist in the making of these six brilliantly painted, larger-than-life works.
Going beyond the traditional medium of painting, these mixed-media, multi-paneled, interactive works put the viewer in touch with senses beyond the visual. This body of work calls for not only the active participation of the eyes and mind but also of the nose, fingers, mouth and ears. Each painting invites the viewer to engage in a visceral exploration of the work by smelling, touching, looking, tasting, listening and feeling. Created in the style of the triptych altar paintings, the opening of doors leads to an opening of the mind and body, in essence giving the viewer a personal immersive multi-sensory experience. Often these days the trend is to escape reality. This exhibition aims to bring us back in touch with ourselves.
