Sam's Birthday Party

On January 26, 2008, the Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum and the Department of Art at Cal State San Bernardino, in conjunction with the Sam and Alfreda Maloof Foundation for Arts and Crafts, will host a 92nd Birthday Celebration honoring world renowned master craftsman and woodworker Sam Maloof.

The birthday celebration will not only offer guests with an exclusive preview of the Maloof exhibit, "Sam Maloof: Essence of the Handmade," at the Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum, it will also provide an unprecedented opportunity to attend the auction of a Maloof Rocker made especially for Sam's 92nd Birthday.

Proceeds from this event will help:

• Support the Sam and Alfreda Maloof Foundation for Arts and Crafts

• Fund a Sam Maloof Scholarship for Art Students at Cal State San Bernardino

• Support an acquisition fund for Ceramics at the Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum

Sam Maloof: Essence of the Handmade

The Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum, in partnership with the Sam and Alfreda Maloof Foundation for Arts and Craft, proudly announces an exhibition celebrating the life and works of Sam Maloof, master woodworker.

Close to 30 pieces of Maloof furniture will be on display beginning January, 2008. The exhibition, showcasing chairs, settees, cabinets, tables and music stands, will be supported by photographs, models, patterns, drawings and an instructional area dedicated to the fascinating process of making a chair. A program of educational events, including art history lectures, gallery talks and a woodworking symposium, are also scheduled to run throughout the exhibition.

Sam Maloof was born in 1916 to Lebanese immigrants. Over the past 90 years, Sam has led a life of many accomplishments, receiving several honors and awards, including an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from Cal State San Bernardino. In 1985, he was the first craftsman to be awarded the MacArthur Foundation Grant, also known as the "genius" grant. Maloof furniture has attracted a high profile clientele, including U.S. Presidents Carter, Reagan and Clinton. His famous rocking chair is also the first piece of contemporary furniture included in the White House Collection of Arts and Crafts.

"Sam Maloof: Essence of the Handmade," will be open to the public Jan. 29 - May 17, 2008, at the Fullerton Art Museum.
